the Workers' Party in June and was elected on the same day as
Secretary-General.

first time took part in General Election, at FARRER PARK
constituency.

took part in General Election, at CHAI CHEE constituency. Came
close to wining the seat for Worker's Party.
PAP transferred the
incumbent candidate, a Malay and brought in a Chinese candidate
who campaigned that JBJ was not able to speak Mandarin or any
Chinese dialect, and Chinese voters would not be able to speak
to him. Despite this campaign, JBJ obtained 43% of votes.

defamation suit brought by Lee Kuan Yew over a speech made at a
rally in the above General Election.

Contested the then RADIN MAS constituency by-election.

1980 - Forced to sell his
banglow property at Rebecca Road to pay for these LEE Dynasty
lawsuits of 1976.

1981 - 31st October
Elected to parliament in by-election of ANSON constituency.
Becoming the FIRST Non-PAP member of parliament after 15 years
of PAP unparliamentary monopoly.

1984 - Re-elected to
parliament in General Election for ANSON constituency,
with increased majority.
The ruling PAP's
share of national votes dropped by 12.5% after JBJ's 3 years in
parliament.

1984-1986 - JBJ was
prosecuted on criminal charges, found guilty by LEE Dynasty's
court and sentenced to fines and 3 months imprisonment.
Released in 1 month. Force to leave parliament in 1986, due to
the $5,000-00 fines imposed on him, which disqualified him
for parliament .

1988 - 2nd

1988 - Forced to sell his
apartment property at Mount Sanai Rise to pay for 1988 lawsuits.

1988 - The Privy Council
which was Singapore's highest court of appeal, said in it's
judgment that Mr. Jeyaretnam was
wrongly convicted on all the charges and that he had suffered a
serious injustice.

1988-1993 - Prevented from
taking part in 1988 General Election, as well as 1991 General
Election due to above disqualification. The 1991 General
Election was brought forward and held within 2 months of JBJ's 5
years disqualification period.
LEE Dynasty also prevented The
Privy Council to continue as Singapore's highest court of
appeal, after Mr. JBJ's cases.

new suit brought by S JAYAKUMAR and four PAP MPs
Another
suit brought by eleven Indian members of Tamil Language Week
that they had organised.
